Lesson 1 : UP Rewards/Register Rewards/Extra Care Bucks

HELLO!  So maybe by now you're intrigued as to how I've managed to get so much stuff for so little.  One of my secrets is how I roll my UPs from one transaction to another (using UPs to pay for items that will produce more ups!)

Getting UPs take a little bit of an initial investment, you have to buy something that is going to give you an UP before you can start rolling them.  I started off by buying 1 Colgate Toothpaste that was on sale for 2.99, and producing a $2 UP Reward.  I used a $1 off any colgate coupon to pay $1.99 for the first one since I didn't have any UPs.  After I paid, I got a $2 UP reward on my receipt, and used it along with another $1 off colgate coupon to get another one for free.  I did 6 transactions, and left with a $2 UP reward to use next time.

NOTE: UPs typically expire two weeks from the date you receive them.

I don't remember exactly how I used that $2 UP reward, but I'll use two of the products featured on this blog to show you how you can roll your UPs into other transactions.

Earlier, GE Twisty Lightbulbs were on sale for $2.99, get a $2 UP. (Featured In This Post)

If you only had $2 in UPs, and used a 50 cent Video Value coupon from Rite Aid's website for watching a video, then you only had to spend 49 cents out of your pocket for a light bulb that is worth very much more.
Then, you turn around, use that $2 UP reward and a B1G1 Free coupon on the Axe Body Spray which is 4.50 for $2, get a $3 UP reward back.  Use your $2 UP, pay $2.50, get a $3 UP reward back.  In this scenario, you've only spent $3 and got an energy saving light bulbs and two axe body sprays.  You've saved $8.99 on merchandise, and left with $3 in UPs.. that's one more than you came with, along with your merch!

As far as I can tell, the UP rewards work the same as Walgreen's Register Rewards and CVS's Extra Care Bucks (ECB)

So now you have an idea on how to roll your ups into other transactions by using coupons combined with your current UP rewards.  Maybe you'll turn out like me, and you can't get enough, you just can't get enough!

Rite Aid Trip 2/28 - FREEBIES

My Total OOP - $.42 of nothing but TAX baby, nothing but TAX

Got this unadvertised deal thanks to my friends over at AFC.  BodiHeat patches (similar to Thermacare) were on sale for $1, and part of a special promotion where you received a $1 UP on your receipt.  I used 7 of the 8 $1 UPS I got last night from the FREE snacks to pay for these, and get 7 more $1 UPS back.

Newspapers Aren't The Only Coupon Source!

While it may be true that Sunday newspapers are the best source for coupons, there are tons of other places to get them.  Signing up with Manufacturer's Email Newsletter or Home Newsletter are good ways to get high value coupons.

Example: My Finish Dishwashing Dispenser was FREE.  I used a $3 Coupon from their website, and a 50 cent Video Value coupon from Rite Aid.  They were on sale for $3.49, so I only had to pay the tax!

P&G Includes many brands like Pringles, Tide, Pantene, Cheer, Tampax, Head&Shoulders shampoo, and many more.  Their coupons are highly sought after, and their coupon booklets go fast and sell for a hefty amount on ebay.

Here they have coupons for up to $3 off Finish products.  That's a good amount!

How Many Newspapers To Buy?

Great question from Ashley!
I personally get at LEAST four papers.  Sometimes you'll need multiple coupons to get larger quantity deals.  Here is an example of why you need more than one.

This week at Rite Aid, Purex 3-in-1 sheets were buy one get one free for $7.99.  Rite Aid's coupon policy is to accept 1 coupon per item, even if it's a buy one get one free sale.
This week, there is a $3 off Purex 3-in-1 laundry sheets.  If you bought two papers, then you have two $3 coupons.  $7.99 - $3 Q - $3 Q = 1.99 for TWO

In previous posts, I've gotten toothpaste and axe body spray for SUPER cheap.  I wouldn't have been able to do this without multiple coupons.

Many people order coupons from www.couponsthingsbydede.com when they get word of deals far, far in advance.  Coupons usually sell for about 10 percent of their face value.  However, you must order at least $3 in coupons before they will sell them to you, and as it's just ME in my household, the 4-6 papers I buy each week are enough to suffice my needs and wants.  Some people buy tons and tons and tons to add to their stockpile, and don't leave any or very much left in the store for others to buy.  That's not proper coupon etiquette.  I don't clear the shelves unless there's only a few of the items left.

So to answer the original question.  4 is a good number to buy.  If a deal is coming up that you think you need a crap ton of, you can order from Coupons and Things by DeDe.  You just better hope the store won't limit the number of items you can purchase.

My First Rite Aid Trip 1/30/11

I choose to support Rite Aid the most because they are usually the most friendly when it comes to me using coupons and doing multiple transactions to get the best deals that I can.  You'll find that a good portion of all my posts will come from Rite Aid.  If you live in Monticello, I believe you'll have a better chance of getting great deals than I do.  Bowling Green is full of couponers who get up a lot earlier than I do.  When I'm in Monticello on Sunday morning, there's not usually a rush of people to get into Rite aid.

On January 30th, Rite Aid had 4OZ Colgate Total on sale for 2.99, and receive a $2UP Reward on your receipt.  In the AD for that week, it was described as "It's Like Paying 99 cents!"

In the January 9th Newspaper, there was a coupon for $1 off any colgate total 4oz or more. (I had 6 Qs)

January 30th, 9AM, off I go to Rite Aid, to do 6 different transactions.  This was my first real coupon trip.

Transaction 1:
1 Colgate Total 4OZ
2.99 - $1 Coupon = 1.99 (2.17 w/ tax)
Received $2 UP Reward

Transaction 2:
1 Colgate Total 4OZ
2.99 - $2 UP - $1 Coupon = .17 of tax
Received $2 UP Reward

I repeated the above transaction 4 more times, paying only tax on the remaining bottles, and left with a $2 UP Reward to use on a future purchase.

This was the start of my Stockpile.

What Is An +UP? Register Reward? Extra Care Buck?

In my posts, you'll see me refer to an UP Reward, Register Reward, or Extra Care Buck.  These are pretty much coupons printed on your receipt for a specific amount off your next order.  These typically include everything except gift cards, prepaid credit cards, alcohol, and prescriptions.

These rewards typically expire two weeks from the date they are earned.

At first I was worried about the store losing a lot of money on my transactions, and I didn't want to hurt Rite Aid.  I had heard they were not doing so well, and many of my friends work at the one here in Bowling Green.  However, they are paid for by the manufacturer who's item you bought that produced the reward.  The store gets reimbursed for everything.  They even get an average of 8 cents per coupon used from the manufacturer as a 'handling fee.'

You can use these rewards to pay for items that produce more rewards.  This is one of the ways I get things so cheap.  It's like rolling your rewards from one transaction to the next, paying as little Out Of Pocket (OOP).

Hey Friends!

So many of you have been seeing my posts on facebook, and a few of you have actually been texting me for more details on how I end up getting such great deals.  Well, this blog is going to be designed to post such great deals that I come across, possible scenarios to use when going to the store, and my actual transactions that I do at the register.

I'm going to start with a couple of tips, some previous transactions that I've done (that you've seen on FB), and the transactions I completed at Rite Aid today.

Welcome to the blog, and feel free to hit me up on my phone or facebook if you have any questions or find a great deal that I have missed.  I don't shop at WalMart unless it's 2AM and there's something I desperately need.  Most of my grocery deals will come from Kroger, and most of my health and beauty posts will come from drug stores.
